Two teens arrested in shooting incident

Lawrence police this week arrested two teens in connection with a shooting on Powers Street April 21 that had officers searching the neighborhood late into the night for clues.

A 17-year-old Lawrence male was arrested Wednesday, and a 16-year-old Lawrence male was arrested Thursday, police spokesman Sgt. Dan Ward said.

According to Ward, both boys fired that evening at an occupied vehicle in the 1500 block of Powers Street, apparently as a result of a previous altercation at Lawrence Alternative High School. No one was injured in the shooting.

Police said they recovered a .22 caliber handgun and a .38 caliber handgun suspected of having been used in the shooting, in addition to other weapons.

The teens were booked on suspicion of aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a firearm and criminal disposal of a fire arm.

Additionally, the 17-year-old was suspected of felony possession of a firearm and aggravated weapons violations.

Sheriff’s office investigating death

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced Saturday that it was investigating the death of an elderly man in the northwest part of the county.

According to a report from the sheriff’s office, an acquaintance of the deceased had not been able to make contact with the man on Friday and went to his residence to check on him. The acquaintance then found the man dead and contacted the authorities.

An autopsy was conducted Saturday in Topeka. Until the results from the autopsy are returned, the death is being investigated as a homicide because the death was unattended.

The sheriff’s department has not released the name of the deceased.
