Concert to feature Elizabethan court music

March 31, 2005

The setting is not exactly an Elizabethan castle, but Dee Hansen, soprano, and Eric Hansen, lute, will present "Time Stands Still: English Lute Songs of Love, Lust and Death" at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

The performance will feature songs with lute accompaniment from the early 17th century. The songs speak to characteristics of human nature that haven't changed since the songs were written. Songs dealing with death call on the singer to reach levels of expression uncommon today, but by the end of the program hope will prevail.

Hansen, an associate professor of music education at Baker University, has sung with the Kansas City Choral Arts Ensemble. She is education consultant for the Kansas Arts Commission and president of the Kansas Music Educators Assn.

Eric Hansen is a division manager at the Kansas State Library. He was a professional bassist and lutenist for more than 15 years.
