Kansas Relays adds name

Marion Jones, who won five gold medals at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, will compete at the Kansas Relays.

Her participation in the Relays will be announced at a press conference Wednesday at KU.

Jones, 29, from Los Angeles, won gold in the 100, 200 and 1,600 relay and the bronze in the long jump and 400 relay in Sydney. A 1997 graduate of North Carolina, Jones was fifth in the long jump at the 2004 Games in Greece.

KU officials won’t confirm Jones’ participation in the Relays until Wednesday.

Jones’ participation means Relays meet director Tim Weaver has landed the five athletes most desired to compete in the Gold Zone Relays competition from 2 to 5 p.m. April 23.

They are: Jones; Maurice Greene, an Olympic sprinter from Kansas City; Stacy Dragila, an Olympic pole vault champ; Charlie Gruber, KU’s Olympic distance runner; and Christian Cantwell, a shot put/discus/hammer thrower from Missouri, who is the 2004 world shot put champion.
