David Shulenburger has been elected to Commerce Bank’s Lawrence Board of Directors. Shulenburger is provost and executive vice chancellor at Kansas University, where he has worked since 1974. Shulenburger has been KU’s chief academic officer since 1993 and is a professor in the School of Business.

He is past chairman of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges Council on Academic Affairs, vice chairman of the Center for Research Libraries and board member of BioOne.

Justin Whitney, Justin Becker and Christopher Taylor are serving as tax interns for SS&C Business & Tax Services Inc.

Whitney and Becker are working in the company’s Lawrence office. Both earned Bachelor of Science degrees in accounting and business from Kansas University in December 2004, and are enrolled in graduate-level courses at KU.

Taylor is serving in the Topeka office. He plans to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Washburn University, Topeka. He earned a scholarship from the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He previously worked for the Kansas Department of Revenue Taxpayer Assistance Center.

Lori Warrender has joined Lawrence Rehabilitation Clinic. Her specialty areas include vestibular rehabilitation therapy/Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, incontinence therapy, women’s health and the treatment of TMJ and scoliosis. Warrender has worked in Lawrence as a physical therapist for many years. She also provides continuing education to fellow health care professionals.

Emily Gaston, physical therapy assistant, has joined Lawrence Therapy Services. Gaston specializes in treating patients with lymphedema, pain problems and orthopedic conditions.

James Howes II, of SS&C Business & Tax Services Inc., has passed Intuit’s QuickBooks Certification coursework and become a certified QuickBooks adviser. The official QuickBooks certification program tests knowledge of QuickBooks and its business management solutions. Howes is an accounting services senior. SS&C Business & Tax Services Inc. has offices in Lawrence, Topeka, Overland Park and Meriden.

Several agents with Realty Executives — Hedges Real Estate in Lawrence were honored as being among the top 50 salespeople for Realty Executives — Mid America Region: John Olmstead, Charles Gruber, Larry Northrop, Lisa Ramler, Kassi Robinson and Bryan Hedges. They received recognition this month during the company’s annual award ceremony and trade show.

Deborah Burns, chaplain for SouthernCare Inc. Hospice in Lawrence, has been appointed to the board of directors for the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging. The board sets policy for the agency, which advocates on aging issues, builds community partnerships and implements programs to help seniors live independent and dignified lives. The agency serves Douglas, Jefferson and Shawnee counties. Burns is an ordained Episcopal deacon, serving at Saint Martin in the Fields, Edwardsville. She has been a Lawrence resident for 34 years.

Ed Samp, a financial consultant with the Lawrence office of A.G. Edwards & Sons, has completed training for the title of accredited asset management specialist. To attain the title, Samp completed 120 hours of training focused on topics such as asset allocation, retirement planning and risk management. The Lawrence resident has been with the company since 2004.

Dr. Ian Kucera has been named medical director of Pain Management Clinic at Stormont-Vail HealthCare. The clinic is an outpatient service of Stormont-Vail. Kucera is an anesthesiologist with Anesthesia Associates of Topeka.

Honors and awards

CP & Associates Architects and Planners was named Architect of the Year by the Kansas City Chapter of American Institute of Architects. The company has offices in Kansas City, Mo., and Lawrence.

Lawrence Public Schools and Lawrence Education Achievement Partner KU Credit Union honored Sue Cranston, special services department secretary, with a Class Act Award on March 17. Cranston, Baldwin, has served the Lawrence school district for 21 years. Colleagues nominated her for the honor because she is “motivated, hard working, and a true team player.”

Pinnacle Chiropractic Management Group recognized Michael Stuart, owner of Stuart Chiropractic Health Center in Lawrence, in February as one of the group’s Outstanding Doctors of the Month. More than 2,500 doctors are members of Pinnacle, which provides member chiropractors with techniques and practices to offer timely and quality customer service.

Mary Allen is winner of CornerBank’s Community Cornerstone Award for March. In recognition of Allen’s service, CornerBank will contribute $100 to the League of Women Voters Education Fund. A reception honoring her service will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the CornerBank lobby, 4621 W. Sixth St. The public is invited to attend.

Allen has been active in University Women’s Club, Friends in Council, Lawrence League of Women Voters, Cordley School PTA, Lawrence Flower Club and Countryside Garden Club. She served on the Lawrence school board for eight years. She was a docent at the Spencer Museum of Art from 1976 to 1991.

Sixty community partner employers and employees will join the staff of the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center to celebrate the their Supported Employment Services program. The recognition luncheon will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Bert Nash, 200 Maine St.

Supported Employment Services emphasizes competitive employment as a pathway toward recovery.

Key elements of the program are rapid job search services, one-on-one employment career consultants, determination of work skills and career interests, matching employer’s needs to job candidates qualifications, and post-hire follow up services.

The Plumbers and Pipefitters Apprenticeship Training of Kansas of Local Union 441 of Plumbers and Steamfitters and their affiliated contractors will begin taking applications for enrollment.
