Thousands run from K.C. to Lawrence for a cause
Brew to Brew relay benefits Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Olga Castillo isn’t used to running 10 miles in one day, but that’s what she did Sunday when her team competed in this year’s annual Brew to Brew relay run from Kansas City, Mo., to Lawrence.
“It was worth it; it wasn’t too bad,” Castillo, 27, of Raytown, Mo., said as she and some of her teammates waited for another runner to cross the finish line on the levee near the Massachusetts Street bridge. They were among a team of seven people participating in this year’s run.

Brian Payne, a student at the School for Advanced Military Studies, Fort Leavenworth, gets ready to cross the finish line of the 2005 Brew to Brew.
“We were missing three teammates, so we had to double up,” Castillo said.
A little more than 2,000 runners took part in this year’s run, sponsored by the Kansas City Track Club as a benefit for the Heart of America chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Teams of runners began Sunday morning at the Boulevard Brewery in Kansas City, and team runners switched off at various points along the 43-mile route.
After the race, in Lawrence, most teams went to Liberty Hall, 642 Mass., for food and drinks. Various prizes also were awarded.
Volunteers assisted the track club with the event, which this year featured a rubber dingy that was used to ferry runners across Stranger Creek near Linwood in Leavenworth County. Organizers said the ferry was necessary because a bridge was out and they didn’t want the runners to have run on Kansas Highway 32.
Castillo, who normally runs just two miles a day, was running in her first Brew to Brew. She said she planned to return next year.
