Rockies rock reeling Royals

? Jason Jennings struck out six in five innings, and Dustan Mohr and Brad Hawpe each homered in a four-run fifth to lead the Colorado Rockies over the Kansas City Royals, 6-3, Sunday.

Jennings, the 2002 NL Rookie of the Year, gave up three runs and five hits, including Mike Sweeney’s first homer of the spring, a two-run shot.

Colorado's Brad Hawpe is congratulated by coaches and teammates following his two-run home run off Kansas City pitcher Dennis Tankersley. The Rockies beat the Royals, 6-3, Sunday in Surprise, Ariz.

“It was a decent outing, a positive outing,” Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. “I thought he stayed down in the strike zone a little bit better. He had a real good breaking ball, along with a good sinker. He didn’t crack. He didn’t crumble.”

The Rockies also did not use a designated hitter, as Jennings was making his third start at an American League park and wanted to get some at-bats. He went 0-for-2 and struck out.

Royals right-hander Mike Wood retired all 12 batters he faced and struck out four, including the side in the first inning. Wood, who was acquired from Houston last June in the Carlos Beltran trade, has allowed just one hit while striking out nine over seven innings in his last two starts.

Dennis Tankersley came on in the fifth and gave up a leadoff home run to Mohr and a two-run shot to Hawpe. Cory Sullivan’s two-out double scored Luis Gonzalez with the final run of the inning. Gonzalez stroked a two-run single off Tankersley in the sixth.

Tankersley gave up six runs on eight hits in two innings.

Sweeney’s first home run came after Ruben Gotay hit an RBI double. Gotay extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Royals have won only six of their 19 games and have lost three straight and five of seven.
