MacDougal sharp in loss to Angels

? Royals reliever Mike MacDougal added another impressive outing to his encouraging spring, striking out two in a perfect inning during Kansas City’s 5-3 loss Friday to the Los Angeles Angels.

MacDougal made the AL All-Star team as a rookie in 2003 but struggled most of last season, appearing in only 13 games with the Royals. In six spring training games this year, he has allowed one run and struck out eight in 61/3 innings.

“MacDougal is throwing well,” Royals manager Tony Pena said. “He’s more consistent with his fastball. His breaking ball is better. He’s added a pitch, a changeup, to his repertoire. He’s in control of everything. His mound presence is there. It’s nice to see him bouncing back after the year he had last year.”

Kansas City second baseman Tony Graffanino will miss at least seven spring training games because of a sprained left ankle but still could be available for opening day. Graffanino hurt himself while fielding a ball against the White Sox on Wednesday.
