Jayhawks split pair

? Kansas University’s softball squad split a pair of games Friday at the Capital Classic. KU beat Rhode Island, 8-0, in five innings, but lost to Minnesota, 2-1.

Sophomore Kassie Humphreys (3-2) earned the victory for KU in the nightcap against Rhode Island, shutting the door with five scoreless innings. Humphreys allowed just one hit and struck out eight.

The Jayhawks scored once in the second inning but exploded for three in the fourth and four in the fifth to pull away for the run-rule victory. Junior designated hitter Ashley Goodrich crushed a three-run homer for KU, junior third baseman Nettie Fierros slapped two doubles and had an RBI, and junior shortstop Destiny Frankenstein had two hits and scored a run.

In Friday’s opener, Serena Settlemier (7-4) allowed just two runs on six hits, but KU’s offense couldn’t get going.

KU (15-9) will play Northwestern at noon today, then face Illinois at 2:30 p.m.
