Warm today, cold front moving in tonight

Lawrence was bright and sunny this morning, with temperatures rising quickly, heading into the upper 50s. But a cold front will be moving in tonight, bringing cloudy skies and cooler temperatures for the weekend, says Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist.

“Clouds are on the increase as we go through the day,” Reith said. “Cooler air is on the way. It looks to arrive later tonight.”

At 8:30 a.m., skies were sunny in downtown Lawrence. The temperature was 47, with a south 8-mph wind making the wind chill 43 degrees. Today’s high temperature will top out at 58, which is average for this date, Reith said.

Clouds will move in during the afternoon as winds switch to northwesterly 10 to 18 mph, he said. As the cold front moves in from central Kansas, Reith doesn’t expect any precipitation.

Skies will then clear out tonight, but temperatues will take a dive down to 32 by early Saturday morning, he said.

Saturday’s high will reach only 52, with northwesterly winds 10-15 mph, he said.

“But the 60s, they are a-coming,” Reith said. Sunday’s morning low will be 30, with Sunday’s afternoon high reaching 60, he said.

There is a chance for some precipitation Sunday night into Monday morning, he said.
