Swimmer finishes 30th in NCAA championships

? Senior swimmer Amy Gruber finished 30th in the 50 freestyle event Thursday at the NCAA Swimming Championships.

The Bigelow, Ark., native, who is competing in the NCAA meet for the fourth consecutive year, recorded a time of 23.06.

“Amy raced well today, despite a technical mistake off the wall halfway through the race,” KU coach Clark Campbell said. “In the 50, you can’t afford to make any mistakes, but we are really excited about the 100 butterfly tomorrow.”

Gruber will compete at the second day of the NCAAs today in the 100 fly. Sophomore Jenny Short, the only other Jayhawk to qualify for the NCAA Championships, will compete in the 100 backstroke event.
