Shooting reported on Kansas Highway 10

Sheriff's officers trying to piece together details of drive-by violence

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers are searching for a gunman who wounded one person while shooting into a moving vehicle early Sunday on Kansas Highway 10 between Lawrence and Eudora.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken to a Kansas City area hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, a news release from the sheriff’s office said. The wounds were not believed to be life-threatening, according to the release.

The vehicle carrying the gunman was dark-colored, possibly bearing Missouri license plates.

According to the sheriff’s account, the incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. about 2 miles east of Lawrence while a vehicle with several occupants from the Kansas City metropolitan area was traveling eastbound on the highway. A second vehicle with the gunman approached. Shots were fired, and the suspect vehicle continued east. Someone in the vehicle with the victim called 911.

A helicopter was called to transport the victim to the hospital. Sheriff’s officers searched along the side of the highway for evidence. Interviews with possible witnesses were being conducted Sunday, but few details about the incident were being released, and officers were still trying to piece together what happened.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 841-0007 or Lawrence-Douglas County Crimestoppers at 843-TIPS. Crimestoppers callers can remain anonymous.
