The Oskaloosa Alumni Banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. March 26 in the multipurpose room at Oskaloosa Public School. It is a covered-dish dinner. All alumni are welcome. The classes of 2000 and 2005 will be honored.

The Lawrence High School Model United Nations team performed at a February convention at the University of Chicago. There were more than 2,000 high school students representing more than 100 schools. Twenty students from LHS attended and represented the school and the district. Eight students received recognition for their achievements through awards given by the conference.

Julia Szabo and Corey Judson received Outstanding Delegation in Historic Security Council. Sam Hueneke and Julia Barnard also received Outstanding Delegation for their work on Disarmament and Security Council. The Outstanding Delegation award is the highest honor students can receive at the competition.

Also receiving recognition were Isaac Lewis-O’Conner and Phung Chau for their work on the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Committee, and Brenna Daldorph and Suzy Allen for their work on the African Union Committee.

The Free State High School Model United Nations team also competed in the competition. Sixteen students from FSHS attended.

Emily Knight and Molly Kristalka received Outstanding Delegation in the Special Political and Decolonization Council. Daphne Tsoutosilis and Jing Li received verbal commendation for their work on the Disarmament and Security Council.

Cameron Moore, Perry, made the fall 2004 dean’s list at Spring Arbor University, Spring Arbor, Mich., by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average. He is a sophomore studying English.

Brian Donovan, a Kansas University professor, and Mechele Leon, a KU student, received fellowships from the National Endowment of Humanities. NEH fellowships support individuals pursuing advanced research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the publics understanding of the humanities.

Donovan will research “Legal Narratives of Sexual Consent and Coercion in the Early Twentieth Century. Leon will research “Mohere and the French Revolution.”

The National Federation of Music Clubs will be having a Junior Festival today at the First Baptist Church. Five Junior Music Clubs will have 90 entries at the Festival. The events will include piano solos, duets, duos and a concerto, violin solos and concertos and musicianship theory. Each student will receive a rating and a critique sheet.

The five Junior Music Clubs are Falen’s Fanfare Piano Club, Kwak’s Suzuki Piano Club, Sue Eva’s Piano Club, Lawrence Suzuki Strings Club, all of Lawrence, and Malotte’s Music Club, Marysville. Evelyn Falen is chairwoman of the Lawrence Junior Festival, and members of the Lawrence Music Club are assisting at the festival.

Music students representing Baldwin Junior High School, Central Junior High School and West Junior High School will compete today at the Washburn University College Music Educators National Conference 33rd annual Junior High/Middle School Solo Festival in Topeka. About 550 students from 35 schools are scheduled to compete.

Baldwin Junior High School participants will be: Regan Smith, Marianne Sansom, Meagan Young, Sharelle Thornton, Brianna Krysztof, Malissa Sansom, Catherine Gerstner, Madeline Roger and Allyson Sass. They will be participating in the voice competition.

CJHS students scheduled to participate include: Raquel Gonzalez, Kali Conrad, Hannah Frydman, Demi Renalt, voice; Charles Frager, Jessie Jacobs, Brand Willis, Nabila Formusho, Annum Chaudhry, strings; Margaret Bierta, Kali Conrad, clarinet; Timothy Clark, Brittany Mailand, percussion; Joe Smith, Jesse Clayton, Tennery Carttar, Scotty Thellman, trumpet; Will Bourg, Jake Frydman, Martin Bergstrom, Mallory Cox, Gabe Ballard-Hanson, Matt Goering, low brass; Raquel Gonzalez, Timmia Hearn Feldman and Hannah Lodwick, flute.

Maria Monroe has been named to the dean’s list at the University of Notre Dame for the fall 2004 semester by receiving at least a 3.7 grade-point average. Monroe, a 2001 Free State High School graduate, is the daughter of Leonard and Jacquelyn Monroe, Lawrence.

Zachariah and Aubrey Brooks, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Kenneth Scott Brooks, born Jan. 18, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Grandparents are Margaret Folks and Bradford and Kimberly Brooks, all of Eudora, and the late Kenneth Folks.

Rich and Kenna Young, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, William Richard Young, born Feb. 18, 2005, in Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He has a sister, Ella Rose, 2.
