Simien named Big 12 player of year in media polling

? It’s hard to get a group of sports writers and coaches to agree on anything.

Yet they were unanimous on one thing: that Kansas University’s Wayne Simien was the top player in the Big 12 Conference.

Simien, who Monday was named player of the year in a unanimous vote of league coaches, Wednesday was named the Associated Press’ Big 12 player of the year, again in a unanimous vote of a panel of 24 members of the media who regularly cover the league.

“I am really, really proud of him. It is a great accomplishment. Wayne certainly deserves to be player of the year in our conference, no doubt,” KU coach Bill Self said of the 6-foot-9, 255-pounder, who became the first player since KU’s Drew Gooden to lead the league in both scoring (19.4 ppg) and rebounding (11.1).

“It’s been a great year. It’s been a blast,” Simien said of his senior season. “Now I’m definitely looking forward to the month of March.”

Simien was the only Big 12 player to average a double-double this season.
