Emory J. McKenzie, Ottawa

? Services for Emory J. McKenzie, 85, Ottawa, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Ottawa. Private family burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.

Mr. McKenzie died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Village Manor Nursing Home, Ottawa.

He was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Lorraine, the son of Roy and Eunice Van Arsdall McKenzie. He graduated from Lorraine High School and Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1942. He received degrees from Ottawa University in 1945, a master’s degree from Duke University in 1947 and a doctorate from the University of Nebraska in 1962.

Mr. McKenzie taught English at Ouachita University in Arkadelphia, Ark., and taught at Ottawa University from 1948 until he retired in 1985. He and his wife received the Distinguished Service Award of Ottawa University Alumni Assn. in 1993.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a teacher, deacon and choir member for 40 years. He was a member of the Homebuilders Sunday School class and was a lay pastor.

He served on the Board of American Baptist Churches of the Central Region and Bethel Neighborhood Center in Kansas City, Kan. He was a member of the Rotary Club. He was a past president of Local Club and past district governor of District 571 in 1970-1971. He was a member of Skilton Music Club and a life member of Friends of the Library, Franklin County Historical Society and Franklin County Genealogy Society. He also was a member of Charles Robinson Chapter of the Sons of American Revolution in Lawrence.

He married Harma Petersen. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Karen McKenzie-McAdoo, Ottawa; a son, James McKenzie, Lawrence; and five grandchildren.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa.

The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the services.
