Quick roughed up as Jayhawks tumble

? Kansas University pitcher Kodiak Quick was roughed up for nine runs on eight hits, and No. 17 Mississippi State routed the Jayhawk baseball squad, 9-2, Sunday in the final game of the NBC Classic at Dudy Noble Field.

Quick (4-1), a junior transfer from Stanford, previously was unbeaten this season, but the Bulldogs jumped to an early lead. Two singles, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a KU error led to three MSU runs in the first inning. Quick settled down in a scoreless second, but the Bulldogs erupted again in the third by scoring four runs.

KU junior shortstop Ritchie Price’s RBI single scored the Jayhawks’ first run in the third, but KU would not score again until a single run in the top of the eighth off a Sean Richardson sacrifice fly.

Quick pitched five innings and struck out just one while walking two. Junior reliever Don Czyz struck out five and held MSU scoreless in the final three innings.

KU (13-8) will play host to North Dakota State for a three-game series this weekend at Hoglund Ballpark. The first game will be at 3 p.m. Friday, followed by 1 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday.
