Jayhawks split pair at SIU tournament
CARBONDALE, ILL. ? Kansas University’s softball squad split a pair of games Sunday at the Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic at Southern Illinois.
KU beat Valparaiso, 4-3, then fell to SIU, 4-2.
In the Valpo victory, junior Destiny Frankenstein had three hits, including a home run, and junior Jessica Moppin added a two-run blast.
Kassie Humphreys (2-2) struck out six Valpo batters and allowed just two hits in the complete-game victory.
Against Southern Illinois, KU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Frankenstein’s single scored freshman Jackie Vasquez, then junior Serena Settlemier’s double plated Frankenstein.
The Jayhawks would not score again, however, and a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth by Katie Jordan lifted the Salukis. Settlemier (5-3) struck out nine in the loss — her first since Feb. 6 against Tulsa.
KU will play host to the Holiday Inn/Jayhawk Classic this weekend at Arrocha Ballpark.
The Jayhawks will play Louisville at 1 p.m. and Southwest Missouri State at 3 p.m. Friday, Louisville at 11 a.m. and SMS at 1 p.m. Saturday, then Louisville again at 11 a.m. Sunday.
