FSHS top seed; LHS No. 6

Free State High earned the top seed and will open the Class 6A state boys basketball tournament Wednesday afternoon against Sunflower League foe Shawnee Mission West.

FSHS is 19-3, and SM West is 13-9. Free State beat the Vikings, 63-43, during the regular season.

Tipoff for the tournament opener will be 3 p.m. at White Arena in Wichita.

Lawrence High, the tourney’s No. 6 seed at 15-7, will face third-seeded Wichita East (18-4) at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The Lions lost to Wichita East, 95-77, in the Topeka Invitational.

Other first-round games match No. 4 Wichita Southeast (17-5) vs. No. 5 Maize (15-7) at 4:45 p.m., and No. 2 Dodge City (19-3) vs. No. 7 SM Northwest (14-8) at 6:30 p.m.

Semifinals are slated for 4:45 and 8:15 p.m. Friday, with the state championship game set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The third-place game will tip off at noon Saturday.

Tonganoxie’s girls team earned a No. 3 seed with a 21-1 record and will open the Class 4A state tournament Thursday against sixth-seeded Royal Valley (17-6). Tipoff is 8:15 p.m. at the Bicentennial Center.

And Wellsville’s boys, the No. 8 seed at 5-18, will face top-seeded Minneapolis (22-1) at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson.
