Pistora’s heroics preserve Tongie’s state trip

? Hitting a last-second shot is a dream kids all over the country share while shooting hoops on their driveways.

Saturday night, Tonganoxie High sophomore Ali Pistora lived it.

Pistora’s 12-foot jumper sent the Chieftains’ Class 4A sub-state championship game against Kansas City Sumner into overtime as time expired, and her teammates made sure it didn’t go to waste as the Chieftains earned a spot in next week’s 4A state tournament in Salina with a 56-44 victory.

“I’ve never been so elated in my life,” said Tongie senior Addie Heim, who scored six of the Chieftains’ 14 points in the extra frame. “I can’t describe the experience. I’ve dreamed about it my whole life, and I know my teammates have. When that time finally comes, it’s unbelievable.”

It felt like everyone in Tonganoxie made the six-mile trek east to pack the gym at Basehor-Linwood High.

The Chieftains, who scored just 24 points in a semifinal victory against slow-moving K.C. Ward, raced to an 18-12 lead after one quarter thanks in large part to six quick points by Pistora.

Then Sumner point guard Marisah Henderson got going.

After dropping 34 points Friday against De Soto, Henderson started the game 1-for-9 from the field. She tossed her headband to the bench in disgust late in the second quarter, then hit two big buckets to lead a 9-0 run to close the half and give them their first lead, 25-23.

Tongie didn’t really recover from the Sumner spurt until there was about a minute left in the game.

Tonganoxie's Kelly Stauch (23), Amanda Lenon (11) and Madison Weller celebrate. Tongie beat K.C. Sumner, 56-44, on Saturday in Basehor to advance to the Class 4A state tournament.

Senior Madison Weller hit a jumper to pull Tongie within three, then an Elizabeth Baska free throw made the score 42-40 with :44.3 left.

Leading by two, Henderson turned the ball over with 6.2 seconds remaining when she went over the half-court line on an inbounds play.

Tonganoxie High's Addie Heim (20) fights for a rebound with K.C. Sumner's Rocki Mitchell. The Chieftains won their Class 4A sub-state championship Saturday in Basehor.

That set the scene for Pistora’s heroics — a free-throw line jumper she’ll never forget.

In OT, Sumner scored about a minute in, but never scored again. The Chieftains hit eight of 10 free throws in the overtime period to book their trip to state.

“People are gonna be scared of us,” Pistora said. “We were just on tonight.”
