Provisional ballots don’t alter results

Sixty-five provisional ballots counted Friday brought the total cast in Tuesday’s election up to 8,934, but they didn’t change the outcomes of the Lawrence City Commission or Baldwin School Board District 4 primaries.

On Friday, the Douglas County Board of Canvassers approved 65 of 96 provisional ballots. Thirty-one weren’t accepted because the voters weren’t registered in Douglas County or because of voter error. Additionally, 22 people didn’t sign the envelope on advance mail ballots.

“The law is clear that if there is no signature, we can’t accept it,” County Clerk Jamie Shew said.

Low voter turnout made for a quick canvass. The entire event lasted about two hours, and that included Shew and his staff feeding provisional ballots through a ballot scanner.

Douglas County Commissioners Bob Johnson and Charles Jones and Cindy Monshizadeh, interim deputy treasurer for the county, served as the canvassers.

The closest race was for the Baldwin school board, where about 20 votes separated Ruth Barkley and Chip Hornberger, at 64 to 45. Both advance to the April 5 general election.

Each City Commission candidate picked up votes through provisional ballots scanned Friday. But Mike Amyx remained the top vote-getter with 4,621 votes. Sue Hack and David Schauner, the only two incumbents seeking re-election, finished second and third, respectively, with 3,768 and 3,569 votes.

They will be joined in the general election by Tom Bracciano who was fourth with 3,508 votes; Jim Carpenter, fifth with 2,993; and George Grieb with 2,288.
