Mary Davidson, Lawrence, was given a special award for exceptional service at the annual awards banquet of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri on Feb. 19 in Kansas City.
Davidson has been a longtime member of the ACLU and was president of the Douglas County Chapter from 2003 to 2005.
National ACLU board member David Burress, Lawrence, attended the banquet. Members of the Douglas County Board who attended were: Phil Minkin, president; Pam Lowenstein, vice president; Steve Lopes, secretary; and Robin Devine.

University Bridge Club announces the winners of its Feb. 26 game. Hosts were Marian Davis and Virginia Williams.
Blue winners were: Willie Stoltenberg, first; Florence McNicoll, second; Dan Whitaker, third; Paul Jordan, fourth; and Gladys Dight, fifth.
Pink winners were: Jane Golden, first; Jean Whitaker, second; Alice Akin, third; Mary Jo Spotts, fourth; and Lorna Allen, fifth.

The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge game on Feb. 23 was stratified and used the Howell movement. The game was directed by Virginia Seaver. Shirlie Vaughn and Florine Creek tied for first place in A with Doris Stubeck and Phyllis Brownlee. Catherine Blumenfeld and Lois Clark were third in A and first in B. Virginia Johnston and Barbara McCorkle were fourth in A and second in B.

The Sunday Afternoon Bridge game used the Howell movement and was directed by Jerry Sloan. Vernon Gregg and Steven Phelps placed first, and Patt Radford and Jerry Sloan placed second. Shari Krentzel and Virginia Hamilon came in third, and Elizabeth Amsbaugh and Barbara Merriam placed fourth.

The Monday Evening Bridge Club had a Sectional Tournament. Thirteen tables participated in the competition. The game was stratified and used the Mitchell movement. It was directed by Virginia Seaver.
The North-South winners were led by Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough who placed first in A and B. Peter Petillo and Bob Hemenway placed second in A and B. Jerry Sloan and Patt Radford were third in A and B. Donald Bush and Shari Krentzel placed fourth in A and B and were first in C. Gladys Rivard and Janice Hollowell were fifth in A and B and were second in C. Carl Mibeck and Jack Mibeck placed third in C.
The East-West competition was swept by Catherine Blumenfeld and Michael Blumenfeld who placed first in A, B and C. John Hickey and James Kelley tied for second place in A and B with Dianne Childs and Judy Hildreth. Jeffrey Nash and Lois Jones placed fourth in A and B, and Donna Johnson and Paul Heitzman placed fifth in A and B. Russell LaForce and Emily Foster place second in C.
