KU golf victorious in Texas invitational

It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but Kansas University golf coach Ross Randall was smiling Wednesday after the Jayhawks won the two-day Texas-San Antonio Invitational.

“Our guys showed they could play OK and still win,” Randall said, “and that should help their confidence.”

Kansas edged Wichita State by two strokes in the 16-team tournament. KU needed 860 shots over the 54 holes. WSU had 862 and Baylor 865.

“Everybody got off to a rocky start,” Randall said, “but Kevin Ward’s low round really helped us.”

Ward, the defending Kansas and Missouri amateur champion, shot a 74 and a 75 in Monday’s rounds, but carded a sizzling 67 in Tuesday’s wrapup.

Tyler Docking was low for the Jayhawks, finishing in a tie for second among the medalists with 69-71-71–211.

Next for the Jayhawks is the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
