The assistant-coaching alterations within Kansas University’s football program appear to have wrapped up.

KU coach Mark Mangino announced Tuesday the hiring of Earle Mosley to fill the last remaining void on the staff. Mosley will coach the team’s running backs, a position left vacated by Pat Henderson, who accepted a job in the athletic department.

Mosley’s last coaching gig was as running backs coach for the NFL’s Chicago Bears from 1999-2003 under head coach Dick Jauron, but he was not retained when Lovie Smith was hired in January 2004. Before his five-year tenure in Chicago, Mosley served as an assistant at Stanford, Notre Dame, Temple, Northwestern, Rutgers and West Chester University, dating to 1979.

“Earle brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program,” Mangino said in a statement. “His work ethic and attention to detail are widely recognized in college coaching circles. He is a great addition to our staff.”

Mosley will inherit a promising halfback fleet for the 2005 season, including John Randle, Clark Green and Gary Green. The backfield lost senior fullback Austine Nwabuisi, but will return Lawrence High product and sophomore-to-be Brandon McAnderson and junior-to-be Michael Reuber.

Mosley is a graduate of West Chester University in Pennsylvania.

Mosley will be one of three new assistants on Mangino’s staff heading into the 2005 season. Tim Beck (wide receivers) and John Reagan (offensive line) were hired last month to replace Tyrone Dixon and Ed Warinner.
