Chargers rout Kaws

SFT shuts down P-L standout Blosser

? A week and a half ago, Perry-Lecompton’s girls basketball squad forced overtime against Santa Fe Trail.

Tuesday, the Kaws suffered a 14-point loss, falling, 56-42, in the first round of Class 4A sub-state at Santa Fe Trail.

Santa Fe Trail's Alexis Pryor drives through the Perry-Lecompton defense. The Chargers won, 56-42, Tuesday in Carbondale.

The differences in the two games were plentiful, but two key statistics killed the Kaws: a lack of offense from Megan Blosser and turnovers.

In the Feb. 18 contest, Blosser led the Kaws by scoring 26 points. On Tuesday, she was limited to 10 points — still a team-high — after stifling defense by Santa Fe Trail’s Brooke Pryor. Blosser fouled out in the third quarter.

“We didn’t have enough firepower,” P-L coach Mark Armstrong said. “We just couldn’t recover from that.”

Then there were 29 Kaws turnovers. The Chargers resembled a swarm of hornets in the third quarter, running presses that continually led to steals and balls thrown out of bounds.

“You don’t deserve to win when you turn the ball over that much,” Armstrong said.

“They just executed it to a ‘T’,” Santa Fe Trail coach Brenda Dahl said of her team’s press. “They did exactly what we wanted them to do. We just heckled the heck out of them.”

The Chargers (13-7) had offensive woes to the tune of 24 turnovers, but, unlike the Kaws (5-15), Santa Fe Trail hit key shots, particularly from the perimeter.

SFT guard Alica Duncan came off the bench and posted nine points on three three-point shots. Fellow Charger Hannah Hicks added two other three-pointers and tied Alexis Pryor for team-high scoring honors with 12.

“We have people who can shoot the ball, but we can’t rely on that,” Dahl said of the three-point shot.

Dahl would rather take advantage of her bevy of tall forwards by establishing her inside game offense.

“As long as we win, I really don’t care who gets the ball,” said Alexis Pryor, who stands 6-foot-1. “As long as somebody’s on, I don’t mind rebounding the ball.”

Santa Fe Trail will play Jefferson West on Friday at Topeka Hayden.
