Area girls roundup: Sluggish first quarter dooms Eudora in loss

? One bad quarter doomed Eudora High’s girls basketball squad Tuesday night.

The Cardinals fell behind 18-7 after the first quarter, then outscored Spring Hill the rest of the game. Didn’t matter. Spring Hill hung on for a 68-60 Class 4A sub-state victory.

EHS coach Cara Kimberlin is confident the outcome would have been different except for that fatal first frame.

“We really played well the second half,” said Kimberlin, whose squad outscored Spring Hill 37-33 after halftime. “We put ourselves into a hole in the first quarter.”

The game see-sawed in the second half. Kimberlin said Eudora trailed by as many as 13 points and led by as many as five in the half, but Spring Hill grabbed the lead late and sank its free throws down the stretch.

“We had some good play by several kids once we got rolling,” Kimberlin said. “It’s important for us to get out of the blocks quick against a team you know can put points on the board.”

One bright spot for the Cardinals (9-12) in the season-ending loss was the play of freshman post Nikki Snider, who scored 10 points off the bench.

“When she catches it, she wants to put it on the floor and get herself to the basket,” Kimberlin said. “She really kind of sparked us when we went on our run.”

Kayla Moyer led the Cardinals with 13 points, and Erin Kracl and Michelle Deluna each added 12.

Baldwin girls 57, Prairie View 55, OT

La Cygne — Baldwin used free throws to take the lead late in overtime, and a timely steal finished Prairie View.

The teams exchanged baskets during the OT until Baldwin took the lead with a pair of free throws. Prairie View could have tied it or taken the lead on its next possession, but Amy Craig picked up a loose ball and passed it to Ellie Meinen, who ran the clock out.

Baldwin will play Spring Hill on Friday at Eudora.

Tonganoxie girls 67, K.C. Piper 30

Tonganoxie — The Chieftains were led by Ali Pistora and Addie Heim’s combined 30 points, but the real story was defense.

Tonganoxie held Piper to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.

Tonganoxie will play Kansas City Ward on Friday at Basehor.
