¢ Volleyballers to Nationals: Free State High athletes Kelsey Harrison, Kristen Karlin and Jessica Scott helped their 16-under volleyball team The Heat earn a bid to the USAV Junior Olympic National Volleyball Championships for the third straight year. The team will travel Friday to Salt Lake City for the nationals. Harrison, Karlin and Scott will return to the varsity squad this fall at Free State.
¢ Alvamar Ace: George Bocquin recorded a hole-in-one on the 167-yard No. 15 hole at Alvamar Country Club. Bocquin used a 5-wood for the ace, which was witnessed by Darin Pearson, Clark Danner and John Shostak.
¢ Youth Snares Bike Bronze: Topeka’s John Funk, competing for the Lawrence-based GP Velotek racing team, took third place in the Juniors 10-12 time trail at the National Cycling Championships in Park City, Utah. Funk won the bronze in 18 minutes, 45.24 seconds over the 10K course, with an average speed of 19.84 mph. In the Juniors 15-16 road race, GP Velotek’s Austin Fick, Topeka, and Joseph Schmalz, Lawrence, finished 10th and 26th, in the 58-rider field. Also, Clay Weinaug, Lawrence, was 41st in the 15-16 time trial; Benn Stover, Perry, was 47th in the 15-16 time trial; Tyler Lau, Lawrence, was 109th in the 17-18 time trial; and Greg Payne, Lawrence, was 112th in the 17-18 time trial.
¢ Jayhawk Golf Club: Van Reichert was low-gross winner in the Jayhawk Golf Club meet Saturday at Alvamar with a 72. He was followed by: Kent Beisner 74, Mike Naegele 76 and Tom Dennis 79. Randy Gebhards was low net at 66, followed by Frank Lewis 68, Mike Huertling 69 and Jim Currier 71.
¢ Lawrence City Open Championship: The early deadline to enter the Lawrence City Open Championship golf tournament, which runs July 9-10 at Alvamar and Eagle Bend golf courses, is Tuesday. ¢ Phenix 14s Take Second: The 14-under Lawrence Phenix girls softball team placed second in an AFA National Qualifying Tournament last weekend at Lake Shawnee Softball Complex. Team members are: Anna Mages, Ottawa; Haley Finucane, Baldwin; Courtney Kasson, Perry; Evan Folks, Madison Oller, Bailey Scott, Eudora; Lexi Smith, Kacie Welborn, Allison Ice, Jamie Morgison and Maddy Wilson, Lawrence. Coaches are: Bill Finucane, Baldwin; Lee Ice, Lawrence; and Marv Oller, Eudora.
¢ Bowlers Win: Kansas University bowlers Marc D’Errico and Alan Emmons, who helped the Jayhawk men capture the 2004 national collegiate championship, teamed with Henry Stockwell and KU alumni Kristina Boehm and Sarah Roenfeldt to win the 2005 Greater Ozarks Open in Springfield, Mo. The KU-led Mixed Nuts team topped the handicapped event, which began February 12 and ended June 12, with a scratch score of 3,426. Tournament officials said the first-place prize is $7,300 with an additional $200 for high team game and high team series in the event for a total of $7,500. D’Errico and Emmons also cashed in the men’s All Events and Singles.
¢ Kids Golf Champs Crowned: Eagle Bend Golf Course served as site Monday for the U.S. Kids Golf Kansas Championship. Age-group winners qualified for the sixth-annual U.S. Kids Golf World Championship, which will be played July 27-30 at Williamsburg, Va. In girls competition, Tori Tebo shot 60 to win the 8-and-under division; Taylor Tummons shot 65 to win girls 11. Boys winners were Taylor Larsen, who shot a 33 in the 6-and-under division; Nathan Demars, who shot 49 to win boys 8; Skyler Tebo, who shot 41 to win boys 9; Alex Springer, who shot 48 to win boys 10; Mark Cunningham, who shot 77 to win boys 11; and Justice Valdivia, who shot 78 to win boys 12.
¢ Track Medalists: Lawrence’s Bridgette Berry and Alexa Harmon-Thomas claimed six medals at the AAU Missouri Valley Track & Field Championships. Berry took the gold in the long jump and high jump and the bronze in the 100-meter dash. Thomas won long jump, 100 and 400.

¢ KVSA Teams Place: A Kaw Valley Soccer Assn. team won the girls U-10 title at the Manhattan 3X3 tournament. Team members were: Maren Kahler, Madeline Caywood, Madeline Dieker, Carly Davis, Kirsten McKay and Allix Ice. Another KVSA team placed second in U-13. That team was made of: Grace Lang, Hannah Carlson, Kaley Tesdahl, Jordan Payne, Olivia Dykes and Sarah Schneider. Another KVSA entry was a U-12 semifinalist. Team members were: Mallory Neet, Hillary Yoder, Hillary Podrebarac, Erin Ice and Natalie Wilkins.
¢ Swimmer Francis 8th: Carol Francis earned placed eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke last week in the National Senior Olympics in Pittsburgh.
¢ LTC Athletes Advance: Thirteen Lawrence Track Club athletes placed in the top four and advanced to the Region 8 AAU Championships with their performances at the Missouri Valley AAU Championships in Kansas City, Mo. The LTC winners were: Monica Howard, girls sub-midget high jump, 4-2; Allison Howard, girls sub-youth discus, 85-6; and Kameron Demby, young men’s triple jump 43-43â4. Kristina Taylor was second in the girls’ intermediate 400 in 59.64. Third places: Riana Wallace Demby, girls sub-bantam shot put, 13-41â2; Monica Howard, 80 hurdles, 16.87; Hillary Yoder, girls sub-youth 3000, 14:37.93; Allison Howard, javelin, 71-1; Chris Smith, boys youth javelin, 116-6; and Dylan Hedges, boys intermediate 1,500, 4:27.91. Fourth-place finishers were: Jennifer Taylor, girls intermediate 800, 2:28.9; and Kameron Demby, high jump, 5-10 and long jump, 19-111â4. Regionals will be in Joplin, Mo.
