Buzz pitching shuts down Lugnuts in Jhawk league shut out

The Buzz’s pitching overpowered the Lugnuts in a Jhawk 4 baseball game June 20 at Holcom.

Chris Sims kept the Lugnuts scoreless and his teammates’ bats provided plenty of offense in an 8-0 win.

Austin Nichols safely crosses home plate for the Buzz in the Jhawk 4 Baeball game, June 20 at Holcom. The Buzz defeated the Lugnuts 8-0 in the contest.

Leadoff batter Caige Sutton was hit by a pitch, but was stranded after Lugnuts pitcher William Thompson struck out the next three batters.

In the bottom of the first after Jordan Jump struck out, Samuel Osburn reached first. Brandon Reynolds then singled, but the inning later ended on a strikeout with no runs crossing the plate.

The Buzz got their bats going in the top of the second with a leadoff double from Sims. Gavin Fischer then drove Sims home for the first run of the game. Nick Bulluck was next up to bat for the Buzz and drove home another run, making the score 2-0 halfway through the second.

Great pitching in the bottom of the inning preserved the lead for the Buzz.

The bottom of the lineup extended the Buzz’s lead in the top of the third inning. After a strikeout, Cameron Warner reached base on a single down the third-base line.

He later was tagged out at home by Reynolds, the Lugnuts’ catcher. A run did score before Jordan Brown was out at first, ending the inning.

Austin Nichols came in to pitch for the Buzz and preserved the team’s 3-0 lead, striking out all three batters that came to the plate.

“At this age, 10 years old, I just let the pitchers continue to pitch in the inning until they reach the run limit,” Buzz head coach Mike Sutton said.

In the top of the fourth inning the Buzz pulled away from the Lugnuts. Austin Bennett led off the inning with a single after the Lugnuts weren’t able to field a pop fly.

Nichols followed up with a double to center field and slid safely into second base, barely making it there before the throw.

Then, on Tyler Yocum’s double to left field, the Buzz scored two runs and reached the five-run-per-inning limit.

As the hour and a half time limit approached, the Lugnuts had one last chance to mount a comeback.

Solid pitching in the bottom of the fourth kept the Lugnuts from scoring a run in the fourth. A great pop-fly catch by Buzz third baseman Tyler Yocum-Wulfkuhle ended the game.

The Buzz pitchers combined for seven strikeouts in the game.

Coach Sutton was proud of the way his team played.

“We fielded the ball well and stayed alive at the plate,” Coach Sutton said. “Playing as a team is always important if you want to walk away with a victory.”
