Hot, sticky weekend ahead

Heat index could hit 100 in afternoon

Pull out the watering can and turn on the lawn sprinklers. Another hot dry day is in store for the Lawrence area, with temperatures soaring to the mid 90s again by late afternoon.

Today will be the fifth day in a row of afternoon temperatures reaching 90 or above — and more 90-degree days are expected through the middle of next week, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. Last summer was milder, with only four days in a row of 90 or above, from July 10 to 13, she said.

“We do have a gusty afternoon in the forecast today,” Schack said. Winds will be from the south to southwest, from 10 to 20 mph, gusting to 25 mph, she said.

Skies were clear this morning, with sunshine expected all through the day. At 8 a.m., the temperature was 76 degrees, with a 71 percent humidity and southeast winds at 7 mph.

Today’s high will reach 95 by 4 p.m., Schack said. The heat index could hit the 100-degree mark today, she said. The average high for this date is 87. The record is 103, set in 1937.

Although a cold front is approaching from the north tonight, most of the thunderstorm activity will stay in Nebraska and Iowa, she said. The Lawrence area might get some clouds from the cold front tonight, but the 90s will continue through the weekend, she said.

“It’s still hot and sticky for Saturday,” she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 73, with the high climbing to 93 by Saturday afternoon under sunny skies.

Sunday’s morning low will also be 73, with the high reaching 93 Sunday afternoon.
