Yellow Jackets hold on for 7-6 victory

No one would describe the Yellow Jackets as a quiet team.

From the first pitch to the last at-bat of their 12-U Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Assn. game Thursday at Holcom, a steady stream of cheers, chants and yells flowed from their dugout.

After the team pulled out a 7-6 victory over the Bullets, the team isn’t likely to quiet down anytime soon.

The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the first inning with Adelle Loney, Mickayla Goger and Elise Loney all crossing the plate. Marley Sutter had a nice play at second base for the Bullets, fielding Meagen Dexter’s ground ball cleanly and throwing to first base for the out.

The Bullets came on strong in the bottom of the inning though, scoring the league maximum of five runs. Haley Smith, Elizabeth Hazlett, Autumn Larsen, Hannah Whipple and Katy Davis all scored for the Bullets, putting the team up 5-3.

The second inning featured more inspired play from both teams. In the Jackets’ half of the inning, Allison Mayer led off with a walk, then stole second and third bases before coming around to score.

Yellow Jackets catcher Adelle Loney stretches to catch a pitch during a Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Assn. game against the Bullets on Thursday at Holcom. The Jackets won the game 7-6.

The Bullets shut down the Jackets’ rally with some nice glove work and good pitching. Third baseman Samantha O’Brien caught a fly ball for the first out of the inning. Then, shortstop Smith scooped up a ground ball and threw to first for the second out of the inning.

After walking three batters, Bullets pitcher Davis faced a bases-loaded jam with Goger at the plate. Ignoring the ruckus coming from the Yellow Jackets’ dugout, Davis stayed calm under pressure, fielding Goger’s ground ball herself and throwing to first base for the final out of the inning.

With her team down 5-4 in the bottom of the second inning, Yellow Jackets pitcher Leandra Whitson retired the Bullets hitters in order, giving her team a chance to win the game in the third inning.

The Jackets offense did their part, coming up with three runs in the top of the frame. Elise Loney, Kelsey McBride and Mayer all scored, putting the Yellow Jackets up 7-5.

The team just had to hold on in the bottom of the inning to notch the victory. When Goger took the mound, the tension was at a fever pitch on the field and in the stands.

Goger started the inning well, mowing down the Bullets’ first batter.

Then things got interesting.

Hazlett walked and stole second and third bases. She then came around to score on a wild pitch, making the score 7-6. After O’Brien walked and stole second base, Jackets first baseman Katie Meyer made the play that might have saved the game for the Yellow Jackets.

When O’Brien attempted to go to third, Meyer gunned a perfect strike across the infield to McBride, who tagged out O’Brien for the second out.

The Yellow Jackets weren’t out of the woods yet, though. The next three batters walked to load the bases, but Goger got out of the jam, striking out the final Bullets batter for the victory, prompting one lengthy final cheer from the Jackets dugout.

The Jackets players were in good spirits after the win.

“Our pitchers did a really nice job,” Dexter said. “It started out rough and then turned into a nice smooth game.”

It wasn’t quite as smooth for Bullets’ coach Kelly O’Brien, but he took the close defeat in stride.

“It’s just good to be out here having a good time,” he said.
