Cubs come up big in win over Orioles

Orioles offer little resistance to Cubs' offense in 23-0 loss

A 12-U Douglas County Amateur Baseball Assn. rematch between the Cubs and Orioles didn’t go the way the Orioles had hoped.

The Cubs struck early and often, taking a commanding first inning lead they would never relinquish en route to a 23-0 victory June 13 at Youth Sports Inc.

“We got off to a strong start, which really helped to set the pace for the rest of the game,” said Cubs head coach Rex Porter. “Because we played these guys last Friday we knew what to expect coming into the game.”

On the mound for the Cubs was Austin Clapp, while Corban Heston pitched for the Orioles.

Cubs catcher Cody Oller started the game with a single up the middle. Oller scored the game’s first run, and Clapp quickly followed, reaching home on an overthrown ball.

Caleb Bowen came to the plate with no outs and two runners on base and notched an RBI, scoring Steve Cower to put the Cubs up 3-0.

After the Cubs scored two more runs, the Orioles recorded their first out. The Cubs sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, making the rest of the game an uphill battle for the Orioles, who trailed 10-0 before batting.

Heston reached base on a hit for the Orioles in the bottom half of the inning, but was left stranded at second.

The Cubs picked up in the second inning where they left off in the first. Sha Detwiler had a hit for the Cubs, who scored three more runs in the inning.

Steve Cowser drove in two of those runs in an exciting fashion with a hit to the gap in centerfield. Cowser tried to make it an inside-the-park home run but realized after rounding third base he wasn’t going to be able to make it home. Solid relay throws from the Orioles meant Cowser was tagged out at the plate for the second out of the inning.

The Orioles again failed to score in the second inning, as two batters struck out and the third grounded out to first base.

“At bat I saw us take a couple of third strikes, so we will be working on that this week in practice,” Orioles head coach Sean Heston said.

Corban Heston came out strong in the third, taking down the Cubs’ batters in order on only four pitches.

The Cubs’ bats returned to form in the fourth inning though. With one run already in, Alex Laughlin knocked in two runners, extending the lead to 18-0.

With the game in danger of ending after five innings because of the league’s run rule, the Orioles failed to score in either the fourth or fifth innings.

Oller continued the Cubs scoring with an inside-the-park home run to right field in the top of the fifth.

“All around, our batting and our fielding were great today,” Oller said. “Our fielding especially didn’t let any errors lead to runs scoring.”

The Cubs finished the fifth with five more runs, and after the Orioles couldn’t score, the game ended because of the run rule.

The win was the second of the season for the Cubs (7-0) over the Orioles.

“Each guy has to play well individually in game to bring us success as an entire team,” Porter said.

For the Orioles there are some things in the outfield coach Heston said he wanted to work on, such as hitting the right cutoff players and getting the ball into the right person in the infield.

“Taking the loss and improving for the next game is critical when teaching these young guys how to bounce back from a tough loss,” Heston said. “Focus on the things that went right, work on some fundamentals and prepare to come back out the next game.”

The Cubs and Orioles both have games tonight at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
