Temperatures to soar into the 90s

Break out the beach towels, grab the sun screen and pour the ice-cold lemonade — the first day of summer is going to be hot and mostly sunny.

“It looks like a toasty afternoon today,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. Most of the cities in the Lawrence area will have highs in the 90s, she said. The temperature was already starting to rise this morning.

At 3:15 p.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 88 degrees, with southeast 8-mph winds under partly cloudy skies. The humidity was 50 percent and the heat index was 92 degrees.

Schack said there was a line of showers and thunderstorm overnight in northwest Kansas. However, the rain and the thunderstorms were breaking up this morning and wouldn’t make it into the Lawrence area, she said.

“We’ll be keeping it dry today,” she said.

Today’s high temperature in will climb to 91 degrees by late afternoon in Lawrence, with some mid and high clouds, she said. The average temperature for this date is 86 degrees. The record is 100 in 1937.

“It’s a little more sticky today than it was yesterday,” she said.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to 67 by early Wednesday morning, under mostly clear skies.

Wednesday will bring even warmer temperatures, with the high reaching 94 and southwest winds 3 to 8 mph under partly cloudy skies.

Thursday’s morning low will be 71, with the high climbing to 95 by late Thursday afternoon, with sunny skies.
