Nothing new: Sweeney back on DL
Fragile KC first baseman out again with another injury
The Kansas City Royals placed first baseman Mike Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left wrist and elbow before Monday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
Sweeney had a setback Sunday while taking practice swings and hitting off a tee, and received a cortisone shot.
The four-time All-Star had not played since Wednesday, when he was injured in a collision at first base with Jayson Werth of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sweeney is batting .299 with nine home runs and 37 RBIs.
The Royals also placed left-hander Jeremy Affeldt (strained left groin) and righty Ambiorix Burgos (strained rotator cuff) on the 15-day DL. The team called up left-hander Jimmy Gobble from Triple-A Omaha and first baseman Justin Huber from Double-A Wichita, where he was hitting .332 with nine homers and 50 RBIs.
