Raiders resurrect Manhattan mettle
Lawrence Legion squad rallies again, 8-7
There’s just something about Manhattan – something that brings the rally out of the Lawrence Raiders.
Just three days earlier, Lawrence scrapped out three runs in the eighth inning to eke out an 8-7, come-from-behind victory over the 17ers.
On Friday, the Raiders dug out of an even deeper hole, scoring the final eight runs to take a 10-8 victory in the Lawrence Invitational.
“That’s just how it’s been with these guys,” Raiders coach Kevin Tucker said. “We’ve gotten in these situations at Manhattan and Topeka, and we’re finding ways to pull out these games that are tight. It’s a credit to these guys for never giving up.”
The Raiders never did give up, even after trailing 8-2 with only three at-bats remaining.
It turned out they would only need two of them to do their damage.
Lawrence chipped away with two runs in the fifth, taking advantage of three Lucas Harrison walks.
But the real damage came in the sixth when the Raiders plated six runs, starting with Tyler Knight’s two-run home run that hooked just inside the foul pole in left.
“I’ve been trying to get him more at-bats, and he’s proven that he can handle good pitching,” Tucker said of Knight. “He’s been getting a lot better at the plate.”
Brett Lisher completed the comeback later in the inning with two runners on. After hitting a line drive just foul down the right-field line, Lisher followed with a double to the same corner that scored two and gave Lawrence its first lead.
Reliever Jake Hoover pitched his way out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the seventh, striking out Ryan Zelenka to pick up the save.
Lisher led the Raiders’ offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Heere and Fitzgerald each added two hits in the victory.
Lawrence will play Topeka Post 1 at 8 tonight to complete pool play.
