Max Falkenstien, Lawrence, receives a bronze plaque from Tyler Waldorf, president of Alpha Nu Chapter of Beta Theta Pi. The fraternity dedicated its basketball court to Falkenstien, a distinguished alum, on May 4. The chapter also recognized Falkenstien's induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Falkenstien received the award for his years in electronic and print sports reporting.

Douglas County Community Foundation board member Monte Johnson, front left, accepted a 00,000 gift on behalf of the foundation from Phil Struble, front right, Landplan Engineering president, and Heath Seitz, Lawrence Home Builders Assn. president. The gift establishes the Lawrence Community Youth Fund, a permanent endowment that will regularly make awards that benefit children in Douglas County.

Estel M. Fyne accepts the 2005 Donna J. Kidd Volunteer Award, presented by Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging. She received the award at a reception May 26 in the atrium of Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Fyne was selected from a group of nominees from the three counties - Douglas, Jefferson and Shawnee - served by JAAA. In the background is Dorothy Rockers, who provided piano music for the event.

Don Gardner accepts the 2005 Don Volker Leadership Award from Doris Rick at the Leadership Lawrence Celebration Breakfast. The event was April 29 at Maceli's.
