Three Big 12 teams going to Omaha

Texas, Baylor clinch berths Monday in super regionals

The Big 12 Conference will have three teams at the College World Series, college baseball’s biggest stage.

Kevin Sevigny hit a three-run double in the fourth to lead Baylor past Clemson 6-1 Monday to win the NCAA super regional in Waco, Texas.

Later Monday, Will Crouch hit a tiebreaking home run and Texas advanced to its fourth straight College World Series with a 6-4 road victory over Mississippi in Game 3 of their super regional series.

Texas and Baylor will join Nebraska, who advanced Saturday, in Omaha for the eight-team, double-elimination tournament that starts Friday at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Bears (44-22) advance to the College World Series for the third time overall and their first time since 1978.

“That’s a feeling you’ll never forget,” Baylor catcher Josh Ford said. “I’ve never been that happy on a baseball field. Today was just our day.”

Cory VanAllen (8-4) got the victory for Baylor, giving up seven hits and only one run over six innings. Ryan LaMotta pitched three innings of shutout relief and picked up his seventh save of the year.

Robert Rohrbaugh (8-3) took the loss for Clemson (43-23), allowing four runs and six hits over 4 1-3 innings.

Texas (51-16) overcame a raucous, football-like atmosphere at Mississippi’s Swayze Field to win the final two games of the series and advance to the College World Series for the 32nd time, remaining in the hunt for its sixth national championship. The most recent title came in 2002, the year the Longhorns started their successful string.

Robby Hudson had two run-scoring singles to give Texas some late-inning insurance.

He drove in Taylor Teagarden in the sixth to make it 5-3. After Ole Miss closed to one run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Zack Cozart, Hudson extended the lead back to two runs by delivering another RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

The Longhorns, the only College World Series team from last year headed back to Omaha, will play Baylor on Saturday. Nebraska will play Arizona State on Friday.
