Heavy rains expected overnight

Area in flood watch through 10 a.m. Saturday

Lawrence is expected to get another soaking — enough for the National Weather Service to issue a flood watch for the area through mid-morning Saturday.

“Heavy rain in the forecast overnight tonight,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

At 8:30 a.m., the temperature was 72 degrees, with a 76 percent humidity and east northeast winds at 10 mph.

“I think we see mostly cloudy skies lasting through the day today,” Schack said.

Today’s high temperature will reach 81 degrees, with south winds 10 to 15 mph and partly cloudy to cloudy skies.

“We have a chance for a thunderstorm developing in the afternoon,” Schack said. However, there is a better chance for heavy rains overnight, she said. The weather service has issued a flood watch through 10 a.m. Saturday for a 23-county area that includes Douglas, Jefferson, Franklin, Shawnee and Osage counties in northeast Kansas.

Saturday morning’s low is expect to fall to 67. More storms are possible on Saturday, with the high reaching 84 and south winds 12 to 18 mph, she said.

Sunday’s morning low will be 68, with the high reaching 85 by Sunday afternoon, with more rain possible on Sunday evening.
