Temperatures steam to 90 today

Break out the ice cold lemonade and find some cool shade — hot, steamy, 90-degree weather is heading to Lawrence for the first few days of the week, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“The heat is on this afternoon,” Schack said. “We’ll have not only hot, but muggy conditions.”

At 8:35 a.m., it was 75 degrees in Lawrence, with calm winds, mostly clear skies and 90 percent humidity.

The temperature is expected to climb to 83 by noon and to 90 by 4 p.m., with southwest winds 8-15 mph, she said.

“We’re heading well above average to start out the work week,” she said. The average high temperature for this date is 83.

Overnight, skies will be cloudy, with the temperature dropping to a low of 69 by early Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service says there’s a 20 percent chance of rain tonight.

An even warmer day is expected Tuesday, with the temperature soaring to 92 degrees under mostly clear skies and 12- to 18-mph southwest winds, gusting up to 25 mph, Schack said.

Wednesday morning’s temperature will start out at 71, then climb to a high of 91, with partly cloudy skies and a chance for thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night, she said.

“It’s been a wet start to June,” Schack said. During the first five days of the month, Lawrence has already had 4.85 inches of rain, she said. The average for the entire month is 5.63 inches.
