Comets’ Swoopes swipes victory
Houston ? Sheryl Swoopes’ layup with 25.7 seconds left gave the Houston Comets a 59-57 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday.
Swoopes scored just three points in the second half, but the Comets held on for their third victory at home and improved to 4-1. Dominique Canty led the Comets with 15 points, and Swoopes added 10.
The Mercury had a chance to send the game into overtime, but Ashley Robinson missed a layup with 0.9 seconds remaining.
Anna DeForge had 20 points for the Mercury (1-5). Leading scorer Diana Taurasi was just 2-for-9 from the floor and scored a season-low four points. She was 0-for-5 from three-point range.
Connecticut 80, San Antonio 69
Uncasville, Conn. – Margo Dydek had 15 points and a team-record nine blocks, one shy of her career high. The 7-foot-2 Dydek faced her former team for the first time since being traded to Connecticut (3-1) in a draft-day deal.
Monarchs 81, Sparks 53
Sacramento, Calif. – Nicole Powell had a career-high 22 points, and Lisa Leslie was held to a career-low three points. Chamique Holdsclaw had 11 points for the Sparks, who fell to 3-3 behind the Monarchs (4-1).
Lynx 73, Sting 67
Minneapolis – Katie Smith scored 17 points, and Svetlana Abrosimova added 15 for the Lynx (2-3). Tammy Sutton-Brown scored 14 for the Sting (1-5), who fell to 0-3 on the road.
Storm 83, Fever 77
Seattle – Lauren Jackson had season highs with 24 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Storm to their fourth straight victory.
