KU chancellor tapped for NCAA task force

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway has been named to a new NCAA presidential task force to study the future of college sports.

Hemenway, who recently completed a three-year term as chair of the NCAA Division One board of directors, will serve on the Fiscal Responsibility subcommittee.

“This is an important effort to discuss and address the next steps in shaping the future of intercollegiate athletics,” NCAA President Myles Brand said. “The leadership of presidents and chancellors is critical in this effort.”

Peter Likins, president of Arizona University, is chair of the overall task force and the Fiscal Responsibility subcommittee.

Hemenway is the only representative from the Big 12 Conference assigned to the task force. Among the other members is James Moeser, a former KU dean who now is chancellor at North Carolina.

The other subcommittees are Presidential Leadership of Internal and External Constituencies; Implications of Academic Values and Standards; and Student-Athlete Well-Being.

The presidential task force will hold its first meeting Thursday and Friday in Tucson, Ariz., to develop a list of what it deems the most pressing problems facing intercollegiate athletics.
