Lawrence Breakfast Optimists’ essay contest winner, Melissa Richardson, gave a reading during a recent club meeting. This year’s essay theme was “The Power of One.” Richardson received a medal, certificate, and a check for $50.

Janet Wright, compliance officer at University National Bank, also spoke during the meeting. She talked about identity theft and preventive measures that can be taken.

Club members visited the Olathe Optimists Club on May 26.

The club is having its annual cookout for the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence on Friday at South Park. The club also will participate in Lawrence’s Relay for Life.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s May 25 game was stratified, used the Mitchell movement and was directed by Virginia Seaver. The North South winners were Mary Joyce and Mona Bell at first in A and B, followed by Chuck Hedges and Patt Radford. Kent McCullough and Clyde Romer placed third in A, followed by Chris Lane and Carol Ball.

The East-West winners were Klee Zaricky and Betty Collier, followed by Virginia Seaver and Lois Clark. Shirley Reese and Shirlie Vaughn placed third in A, with Harriett Olson and Barbara Figgins placing first in B.

The Wednesday Evening Bridge game May 25 was stratified, used the Howell movement and was directed by Don Brennaman. Jo Andersen and Ilse Steinhardt placed first, followed by Shari Krentzel and Don Bush. Mary Beth Treece and Judy Bevan were third, followed by Harry Talley and Don Daugherty.

The Friday Afternoon (TGIF) Bridge Club’s May 27 game was stratified, used the Mitchell movement and was directed by Don Brennaman. The North South winners were Harry Shaffer and Lois Clark, who placed first in A, followed by Frances Vogel and Erna Holmes. Don Daugherty and Harry Talley placed third in A and first in B and C, followed by Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough. Judy Bevan and Phyllis Brownlee placed second in B.

The East-West winners were Catherine Blumenfeld and Lynn Hui at first in A and B, followed by Madelyn Jenks and Mona Bell. Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges placed third in A, followed by Vernon Gregg and Polly Schoning, who were fourth in A and third in B. Sam Pierron and Grant Sutton placed first in C.

The Sunday Afternoon Bridge Club’s game used the Howell movement and was directed by Jerry Sloan. The winners were Jerry Sloan and Patt Radford, followed by Barbara Hamilton and Bill Hamilton. Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd placed third.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Club’s game was stratified, used the Mitchell movement and was directed by Eldon Herd.

The North-South winners were Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough, followed by Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd at second in A and first in B. Pat Burgstahler and Margarete Hartman placed third in A, second in B and first in C. Dorothy Netson and Jeffrey Nash were fourth in A and third in B, with Ann Thompson and Grant Sutton placing second in C.

The East-West winners were Donna Johnson and Peter Petillo, followed by Ruth Amsbaugh and M. Merriam at second in A and first in B. Mary Beth Treece and Judy Bevan placed third in A, second in B and first in C.
