Storms thunder through city

A thunderstorm was rumbling through Lawrence this morning, bringing strong winds, lightning, hail and heavy rains. And another round of storms is expected this afternoon and evening.

“We’ve had reports of pea-sized hail. And mostly reports of very heavy rains and very dangerous lightning,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist.

The thunderstorm moved into Lawrence shortly after 8 a.m., bringing most of the heaviest rains to south and southeast Lawrence, Reith said. By 8:30, the heaviest rain had passed through the south of Lawrence and was moving south and east toward Baldwin and Wellsville, he said.

The National Weather Service issued an urban and small stream flood advisory about 7:50 a.m. for Douglas County and eastern Jefferson County. The weather service reported that the rain could be falling at a rate of 2 inches per hour, creating ponding of water on streets, roads, ditches and in underpasses.

Reith said he expected most of the rain to be out of the Lawrence area by noon.

“Once this morning storm passes, we’ll see a few breaks in the clouds,” Reith said. Today’s high temperature will reach 83 degrees.

He said Lawrence is also expected to get another round of thunderstorms this afternoon into the evening.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to a low of 66 degrees by early Saturday morning he said. Saturday’s high will climb to 85, with the chance for more severe weather Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve got another chance for thunderstorms tomorrow. Then we get a break for a few days,” Reith said.

Sunday’s weather should be dry, he said.

Sunday’s morning low will start out at 65 degrees adn climb to a high of 83 under partly cloudy skies, he said.
