Heavy rains, flooding expected overnight

Commuters traveling home this afternoon and again later tonight should watch out for flooded roadways, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Schack said the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch through noon Saturday for an area that includes Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties.

“We’re going to start up some heavy rains again tonight and they should come to an end by about 7 a.m. tomorrow morning,” she said.

As of 5 p.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport, northeast of Lawrence, had recorded 1.78 inches of rainfall, while the 6News studios in downtown Lawrence had recorded 1.61 inches.

Schack said the rain is expected to continue through the late afternoon. She said the rains will eventually stop, then pick up around midnight. There could be some thunderstorms, but the biggest threat will be heavy rains the the potential for flooding, she said.

Saturday’s morning low will drop to 64. Lawrence will get a few dry hours, before another storm system arrives, she said.

“It looks like the clouds break up a little bit in the early afternoon, so we’ll get a little bit of sunshine,” she said.

Saturday’s high will be “a sticky 85,” she said.

“It will be warm and muggy. And any sunshine we get is going to help fuel more thunderstorms redeveloping tomorrow afternoon and evening,” she said.

The storms will develop in the late afternoon, she said.

Saturday evening, the possibility of strong storms diminishes, she said. The low will drop to 68 by early Sunday morning.

Sunday’s high will reach 83, under partly cloudy skies and a chance in the afternoon for an isolated storm, she said.
