Insist on ID

To the editor:

On the back of your credit card, instead of or over the top of, your signature, write “Please ask for ID.” Do not cover up the secret, tiny three-digit code a checkout person uses when your card doesn’t swipe the first time. (Or write it on back of the card with indelible ink pen.)

Since you have your wallet open anyway to get your card out, this is no trouble. It keeps anyone from stealing or using your card.

When the salesperson asks for your ID, just smile and say, “thank you.”
