Chiefs sign two draftees, but not top pick Johnson

? The Kansas City Chiefs signed their fourth- and sixth-round draft picks Friday, but No. 1 pick Derrick Johnson remained out of camp.

Kansas City Chiefs tackle Thomas Barnett, front, a free agent from Kansas State, works on catching medicine balls during a training-camp practice. The Chiefs worked out Friday in River Falls, Wis.

Chiefs president Carl Peterson said he was in daily contact with representatives for Johnson, who was taken 15th in the first round and is expected to step into a starting role.

“I wouldn’t speculate on any time limit,” Peterson said when asked if Johnson’s signing could be imminent.

He said the negotiations had not been contentious.

“We’re still having conversations,” he said. “I had a conversation with (Johnson’s agent) today.”

Peterson said the 13th and 14th draft picks, who were taken right ahead of Johnson, had signed.

“I think when (Johnson’s representatives) and his associates see those numbers and where we are, hopefully we will be closer to an agreement,” Peterson said.

The Chiefs said they had reached a three-year contract with wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe, who was taken in the fourth round, and defensive end Khari Long, the second of their two sixth-round selections.
