City wakes to Octoberfest of cool weather

Today, July 28, is normally the warmest day of the year. But if you got up around sunrise, it seemed more like an average October morning, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“You might want to grab a jacket,” Schack said.

Lawrence set a new record low of 52 in comparison of the old record of 58 set for this date in 1933.

“Fifty-two degrees is the average low temperature on Oct. 6,” Schack said. The average low for this date is 70.

At 8:30 a.m., the temperature was 59, the humidity was 90 percent and the winds were from the north-northwest at 3 mph.

Temperatures will start warming up today, and the high will reach 85 by late this afternoon, she said. The average high for this date is 92 degrees.

The cold front that came through on Tuesday is pushing off to the east, taking the cloud cover off the Central Plains and bringing clear skies to the Lawrence area, Schack said.

“Make sure and remember your sunglasses,” she said. “We have all sunshine in the forecast today.”

Overnight, the temperature will fall again into the 50s, bottoming out at 57 degrees by early Friday morning, she said.

“Tomorrow we are climbing up to around average,” Schack said. “The winds will switch out of the south, allowing not only the temperatures to rise, but we bring back a few clouds.”

Friday’s high will climb to 89 by the late afternoon, with southwest winds at 3 to 8 mph, she said.

“The weekend looks pretty good,” she said.

Saturday morning’s low will be 62, with the high reaching 91 by Saturday afternoon.

Sunday through Tuesday, Lawrence will have morning lows in the mid 60s and afternoon highs in the low 90s, she said.
