Record low temperature greets early risers

Clear skies and a record low temperature of 55 degrees — that’s what Lawrence woke up to today. The cool weather will last through the day, with the high topping out around 79 degrees, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We don’t have the haze, the humidity and the high temperatures. It’s a cool morning out there,” Schack said. “We are dry to start out the morning, with barely a cloud to be found.”

This morning, Lawrence broke the record low temperature for this date, when the temperature fell to 55 degrees just before 6 a.m. The previous record low for this date was 58, set in 1971, Schack said.

“It’s going to be great all day today,” Schack said. “We’re topping out at 79 degrees. Can you believe it?”

The average high for today’s date is 91. The record high is 109, set in 1936.

Overnight, the low will fall to 54 degrees by early Thursday morning, which could be another record low. Thursday’s high will be 85, with northerly winds, 5 to 10 mph.
