Royals demote Wood

? Right-hander Mike Wood, one of three players the Kansas City Royals acquired in the Carlos Beltran trade last season, was optioned Monday to Triple-A Omaha.

The Royals also purchased right-hander Shawn Camp’s contract from Omaha, where he was 3-6 with a 3.86 earned-run average in 21 games, including seven starts. Camp will take Wood’s spot as a middle reliever.

Camp began the season with Kansas City, but was sent to the minors April 28 with an 0-2 record and a 12.15 ERA in 10 relief appearances.

Wood was 3-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 37 relief appearances, and he allowed 15 of 30 inherited runners to score. Since May 27, opponents hit .321 off Wood, compared with .188 before that.
