4-year-old drowns at Perry Lake

A 4-year-old Ozawkie boy drowned at Perry Lake Monday night.

Johnathon Jacob Van Vleck died about 8 p.m. Monday while swimming with a group of six other children and two adults near a boat ramp at Lakeside Village, a subdivision on the east side of the lake, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said one of the adults did a head count and realized that Van Vleck had gone missing. Shortly after, they found the boy floating in the water. Emergency CPR was attempted, but to no avail.

The boy was declared dead at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka. Officials said the drowning appeared accidental, pending autopsy results.

“There’s nothing suspicious about it — just an unfortunate accident,” said Capt. Tim Byers of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
