Mule deer drawing completed

Whitetail deer thrive throughout Kansas, but mule deer are fewer in number and confined primarily to the western one-quarter of the state.

For this reason, permits to hunt a mule deer – called resident any-deer permits because they are confined to residents only – must be obtained through a drawing. The deadline for this year’s drawing was July 15.

Wildlife and Parks officials will report the results of the drawing by Aug. 1. Staff are still compiling results, and successful applicants will be notified by mail in early August.

State officials seek liberal hunter access

Kansas wildlife officials are urging landowners to provide liberal hunter access to their property in order to help control the state’s deer population.

If a landowner does not allow hunting, even if the areas around his property do allow hunting, a refuge is created.

Deer quickly learn where these safe havens are located, and deer in these areas will continue to multiply, regardless of the number of permits issued.

In addition to allowing hunter access, landowners can apply for a big-game damage control permit, if they experience significant crop damage.
