Thunderstorms clear out

Lawrence got just under half an inch of rain today, the result of sporadic morning thunderstorms that rumbled through northeast Kansas.

But that’s the last wet weather the city should see for awhile – hot and dry conditions are in store for the next several days, says Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

Today’s official rain total at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 0.44 of an inch before the storms moved out around 1 p.m.

At 4 p.m., the temperature was 82 degrees in Lawrence, with winds 7 to 13 mph from the east and a heat index of 87 degrees.

Sayers said tonight will be mostly clear.

“There’s a very slight chance for a storm, but it looks like, for the most part, we stay dry,” Sayers said. The temperature will drop overnight to 72 by early Wednesday morning, he said.

The wet ground will help to hold the temperature down a couple of degrees in the afternoon, he said. Sayers says the ground moisture should hold the temperature to a high of 96 degrees by late Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday’s morning low will start at 71 degrees and climb to a high of 98 on Thursday afternoon, with sunny skies. Afternoon highs of 99 degrees are expected for both Friday and Saturday, Sayers said.
