Padres activate Loretta

? Padres second baseman Mark Loretta and first baseman Phil Nevin were activated from the disabled list on Monday, bringing the NL West leaders closer to full strength. Loretta, who had been on the 60-day DL, and Nevin are expected to be in the starting lineup when the Padres open a series at the New York Mets today.

To make room on the roster, right-handed reliever Rudy Seanez, a former Royal, was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 8, because of a strained right shoulder, outfielder Ben Johnson was optioned to Triple-A Portland, and left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes, another ex-Royal, was put on waivers for the purpose of his unconditional release.

Triple-A pitcher Miguel Asencio, also a former Royal, was put on waivers for the purpose of his unconditional release, clearing a 40-man roster spot for Loretta.
